THE TWO-SECOND GAP

You give the ball away in the 10th minute. Bad touch, wrong read, doesn't matter which. It's gone, and so is the next two minutes of your game, because your head is still on the mistake while the play in front of you needs your full attention.

That gap, between the mistake and the next touch, is where games get decided. I call it the two-second gap, and almost nobody trains it.

Closing it isn't about being "mentally tougher." It's a skill. And skills can be trained.

That training is the MRT Code, short for Mindset Readiness Training. Eight principles, built to train the mental side of the game the same way you train your first touch or your fitness.

I built it coaching soccer players, from club to Division I. The same eight principles now show up across every sport I work with, because the mental game doesn't change with the ball. Soccer is still where this system was built, and where I spend most of my time.

IS THIS COURSE RIGHT FOR YOU?

The MRT Course is designed for athletes who want to actively train the mental side of their game, not just think about it.

THIS IS FOR YOU IF...

You want to perform with more consistency under pressure.

You struggle to reset quickly after mistakes.

You want stronger focus, confidence, and routines.

You're willing to practice your mental skills just like your physical ones.

THIS IS NOT FOR YOU IF...

You're looking for a quick motivational fix.

You expect results without putting the work in.

You're not willing to reflect on your performance and habits.

You're looking for private 1-to-1 coaching rather than a self-paced course.

BUILT ON THE FIELD, NOT IN A CLASSROOM

I'm on staff with Saint Michael's College Softball Team and coach youth players through Peak Football Academy. I've also worked with athletes now playing at Villanova, Binghamton, and ETURE Sports in Spain.

Peak alumni have gone on to play varsity soccer at Middlebury, Norwich, Franklin Pierce, American International College, Saint Lawrence, Husson, Susquehanna, Edgewood, the University of New England, and Saint Joseph's College, club soccer at Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech, and prep soccer at Kimball Union Academy, Taft Preparatory School, and Millbrook Preparatory School.

This isn't theory pulled from a textbook. It's the same system I use, in person, with the players and programs named above.

WHAT IS THE MRT CODE?

Mindset Readiness Training, or MRT, is built around eight core principles. They aren't slogans, and they aren't a pep talk before the big game. They're trainable skills, the same skills that separate players who perform up to their ability from players who leave it on the field.

The full program is eight modules, self-paced, paired with a training workbook built to be written in and returned to, not read once and shelved.

Each principle stands on its own. Together, they build something bigger: a player who's ready, mentally, every time they step on the field.

01 <h4>MINDSET</h4>

Build Your Mental Foundation

Every player has a moment where the difference between their best half and their worst comes down to one thing: how they see it. A bad call, a mistake, a step behind on a marking run, none of it is fixed. It's a lens, and a lens can be trained. Mindset is where the MRT Code starts, because everything else in the system is built on top of it.

02 <h4>GOALS</h4>

Find Your Fuel

Motivation gets you to preseason. It doesn't get you out of bed for a 6 a.m. run in the middle of a long season when nobody's watching. That's drive, and drive isn't something you're born with. It's built, one early morning at a time, and it's what separates a good season from a career.

03 <h4>FOCUS</h4>

Lock In, Block Out

This is the two-second gap in action. One bad touch, one blown mark, one call that goes against you, and suddenly you're playing the last mistake instead of the next one. Trying to "forget it" only makes it louder. Players learn to lock onto the next touch so completely that the mistake has nowhere left to live.

04 <h4>DISCIPLINE</h4>

Control What You Can Control

Extra time. Down a goal. Legs are gone and the ref just missed an obvious foul. In that moment, a player is either in control of themselves or they're not, and everything that happens next follows from that one decision. This principle is the difference between reacting and responding.

05 <h4>VISUALIZATION</h4>

See It Before You Do It

The brain doesn't fully separate a moment you've lived from one you've clearly imagined. Elite players use that. They've already taken the penalty, already made the run, already been down a goal with ten minutes left, dozens of times, before it happens for real. This principle builds those reps before the ones that count.

06 <h4>ROUTINES</h4>

Structure Your Success

Every decision, what to eat, when to sleep, how to respond to a bad training session, costs energy. Players who perform well consistently aren't leaving that to chance on gameday. Their routines handle the small stuff automatically, so there's more left for the moment the game actually turns.

07 <h4>LEADERSHIP</h4>

Raise the Standard

Leadership doesn't wait for a captain's armband. If a teammate is counting on you for anything, you're already leading, whether you've noticed or not. This principle closes the gap between the leader you already are and the one your team actually needs.

08 <h4>CULTURE</h4>

Build It or Be Built By It

Every team has a culture. Some build it on purpose. Most let it happen by accident, and it shows up in how they respond when they're down a goal with fifteen minutes left. This principle is about building a standard that holds up even when the coach can't say a word from the sideline.

HOW THE EIGHT WORK TOGETHER

These aren't eight separate lessons. They build on each other. Mindset gives you the foundation. Goals give you the fuel. Focus, discipline, and visualization sharpen how you compete. Routines make it repeatable. Leadership and culture take what you've built individually and extend it to the team around you.

Train all eight, and you're not just mentally tougher. You're mentally ready every day, not just your best ones.

FOR PARENTS

You've watched the transition up close: a player who worked for years to get here, then has to handle a level, a schedule, and a pressure that's completely new. When it gets hard, the physical training doesn't disappear. What's tested is everything else.

โ€œWe are incredibly grateful for Joe's impact on Grace's athletic and personal growth, and we highly recommend him to any athlete looking for guidance, support, and mentorship. The transition from high school to Division I athletics is challenging, and Grace faced even greater obstacles during the second half of her freshman year. Managing recovery, academics, and the demands of a D1 program was stressful, but Joe's support and encouragement helped her stay focused and keep moving forward. I truly credit him with helping Grace successfully navigate her first year of college, and we couldn't be more appreciative of the positive impact he has had on her journey.โ€

Melissa M., mother of Division I athlete

Joe helped our athlete develop a much stronger approach to pressure, setbacks, and preparation. What stood out most was that the work wasn't just motivational. It gave them practical tools they could actually use to reset after mistakes, refocus during difficult moments, and approach training and competition with more confidence and intention.
